This week both of Calderdale’s local MPs voted against the Conservative motion in Parliament to reverse the Labour Government’s cruel plans to cut the Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners who don’t receive pension credit.
“The local newly elected MPs can spin their actions however they like, but the truth is clear: they have chosen party loyalty over the well-being of our vulnerable residents. This isn’t the change that people were promised.” said Councillor Leigh.
Age UK warns that this decision could plunge 2 million pensioners, who sit just above the pension credit threshold, into serious trouble this winter. Residents in rural communities and older housing across the Calderdale will be particularly vulnerable due to poor insulation and outdated heating systems.
This payment is important in helping these residents afford heating during the coldest months - now residents may be faced between heating and eating.
Labour’s own analysis shows that 4,000 pensioners could potentially lose their lives without this payment. But they continue to claim that the £1.5bn it will save from this cut is necessary to stop a run on the pound.
But if this was really the case, then why has the Government offered inflation-busting pay rises which will cost at least £9bn.
This includes a 22% rise for junior doctors, and a £10,000 rise for train drivers who on average will now earn £75,000 per year.
Labour’s decision is not just wrong—it’s a betrayal of our elderly residents.
