Jill Smith-Moorhouse has been selected to stand in Calder Ward, at the upcoming local elections.
Jill has a joined-up plan for Calder Ward, to deliver on your priorities:
Caring for our environment and flood management. The Conservatives are committed to meeting our environmental responsibilities and working towards our net-zero carbon target. The Conservative Government, with lobbying from our local Member of Parliament, have delivered almost £120 million for flood defences in the Calder Valley - this is one of the largest funding packages ever provided to a single constituency.
Preserving and celebrating our heritage. Calder Ward is immersed in history, accompanied with scenic views and stunning architecture. We need to do more to celebrate our heritage assets in Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall, Pecket Well and all of our localities. If elected, and as a member of the Halifax Civic Trust, I will work to market and protect our wonderful inheritance and scenery.
Backing local businesses and scrapping Labour's parking charges. Following the success of the vaccine roll out, and the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, we should have backed the recovery of our high streets and local businesses. Instead, the Labour-run Council extended parking charges - this was a kick in the teeth for businesses in Calderdale! The Conservatives will scrap the extended parking charges and make it free to park in Hebden Bridge once more, from 6pm.
Supporting women and defending same-sex spaces. On the Council, I will stand up for women's interests - and I am officially supporting the campaign of the Women's Rights Network. The Labour-run Council are complicit in attempting to remove Single sex spaces despite legal protections provided by The Equality Act - this is unlawful. Women and girls are losing their rights to single sex spaces in changing rooms, toilets (even in schools), hospital wards, prisons (even in showers) and rape crisis centres. I will fight to stop this.
Protecting our community facilities and libraries. Unlike your Labour Councillors which tow the Party line, I will fight to protect community facilities and amenities in Calder Ward. The Labour-run Council has wrongly shut many libraries without proper public consultation.
Fighting fly-tipping and crime. The Labour-run Council has failed to prevent or tackle the blight of fly-tipping. Across Calder Ward, rubbish has been dumped - rural roads in particular. Labour introduced waste charges at tips, and then cut opening hours - almost encouraging fly-tipping. The Conservatives have a plan to scrap waste charges at council tips. Furthermore, we will recruit more community wardens with mobile CCTV cameras to catch offenders in the act and take them to court. We will also have more maintenance officers to tidy up fly-tipping.
If you live in Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall, Old Town, Pecket Well, Colden, Blackshaw Head or Lumbutts - vote local, vote for Jill Smith-Moorhouse on Thursday 5 May.
