Local Conservatives have pledged to scrutinise and hold the Labour-run Council and Sowerby Bridge Labour Councillors to account over the proposed changes to Sowerby Bridge market on Wharf Street; the busy A58 that runs through the heart of the town.
Mr Mark Edwards, a local Conservative activist, said:
"I will monitor progress and hold the Labour-run Council and Labour Councillors accountable for the project. We need to work hard to ensure it's delivered on-time, to budget, and with the minimum of disruption to residents, businesses and traffic. Furthermore I will monitor and measure the effect of lost on-street parking spaces on local businesses; road-narrowing and traffic pinching on traffic congestion and air pollution; and work with the Council and The Highways Agency on the potential adverse effects of the project on the busy A58 that runs through the heart of the town. Any residents who have concerns about the project are urged to contact me, Mark Edwards. I will fight their cause to hold the Labour-run Council and Sowerby Bridge Labour Councillors to account."
The former Councillor for Sowerby Bridge, Andrew Feather, said:
"I remember the market being built during my time as a Councillor for Sowerby Bridge (1999 - 2011) where, alongside my Conservative Councillor colleagues, John Sharp, Howard Blagborough and Amanda Byrne, we supported a number of improvements to the town. It's a real shame to see the market in its current state of dilapidation, run down and neglected by Labour-run Calderdale Council and the Labour Councillors that took over from us. Once again, the town's tax-payers are being asked to dip into their pockets to pay for Labour's ineffectiveness. If they are not going to run the town properly, it's time for them to move over and make way for people who can."
