Statement from Cllr Steven Leigh MBE, Leader of the Conservative and Unionist Group on Calderdale Council.
It is with great sadness that we receive the news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was an inspiration to countless people across the Commonwealth and the world, and a symbol of all that is great and wonderful about our United Kingdom.
Many residents across Calderdale will remember her visit in 2004, where Her Majesty visited the Piece Hall and Halifax High School. Some may even remember her visit in 1949. Her Majesty was an ever present figure throughout all of our lives, and embodied almost a century of history which binds us together in unity as a community, and as a nation.
In those times of struggle and hardship, Her Majesty has provided comfort and reassurance, from her days as a princess joining the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War, right through to raising our spirits and morale as Queen throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. She will always be remembered for her sense of duty, service to the British people and as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
